The Common Fund supports bold scientific programs that catalyze discovery across all biomedical and behavioral research. These programs bring together investigators and multiple NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices to collaborate on innovate research. The NIH is requesting ideas for biomedical and behavioral research challenges and opportunities that may inform Common Fund workshops, pilot initiatives, or new programs.

  • NIH ComPASS: OTA-22-007 Full Application Technical Assistance Webinar INVITED APPLICATIONS ONLY

    NIH staff hosted a technical assistance webinar for community organizations who received an invitation email to submit a full application to the NIH Common Fund’s Community Partnerships to Advance Science for Society (ComPASS) Research Opportunity Announcement (ROA) OTA-22-007. In this presentation, NIH staff provided an overview of the ComPASS program, full application requirements and review process, a brief overview of the Other Transaction Authority (OTA) Mechanism and the NIH ASSIST system. They also answered questions from webinar participants. The goals of ComPASS are to 1) develop, share, and evaluate community-led health equity structural interventions that leverage partnerships across multiple sectors to reduce health disparities and 2) develop a new health equity research model for community-led, multisectoral structural intervention research across NIH and other federal agencies.     The NIH staff pre-recorded a technical assistance presentation to help applicants prepare an application for the NIH Common Fund’s Community Partnerships to Advance Science for Society (ComPASS) Funding Opportunity Announcement RFA-RM-23-001. In this presentation, NIH staff provided an overview of the ComPASS program, full application requirements, eligibility criteria and peer review process, and a brief overview of the U24 mechanism. The goals of ComPASS are to 1) develop, share, and evaluate community-led health equity structural interventions that leverage partnerships across multiple sectors to reduce health disparities and 2) develop a new health equity research model for community-led, multisectoral structural intervention research across NIH and other federal agencies.   • Pre-application Webinar for RFA-RM-22-001

    On February 16, 2022 the NIH staff held a pre-application webinar for the NIH Common Fund’s Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity initiative funding opportunity announcement RFA-RM-22-001. NIH program, grants management, and review staff discussed the overall scope and intent of this funding opportunity, the review process, and the use of the cooperative agreement (U01) mechanism. NIH staff also discussed approaches to how to advance health equity through implementation science. Through transformative health disparities research and the commitment to Minority Serving institutions, this initiative supports NIH’s broader commitment to end structural racism and racial inequities throughout the biomedical research enterprise and the goals of the NIH UNITE effort.

  • SPARC HORNET Informational Webinar

    The Office of Strategic Coordination (NIH Common Fund) has published a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for a new initiative of the Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions (SPARC) program. This initiative called the Human Open Research Neural Engineering Technology (HORNET) Initiative (U41 Clinical Trial Optional) is intended to support HORNET Centers to develop and disseminate open-source implantable neuromodulation modules and systems to help facilitate translation of new peripheral neuromodulation therapies to humans. The FOA utilizes the cooperative agreement U41 activity code and applications are due January 12, 2022 by 5:00PM local time of applicant organization.
