The NIH Common Fund is conducting strategic planning for a potential Complement-ARIE program to catalyze the development, standardization, validation, and use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) that will more accurately model human biology.  

As part of planning for this potential program, the NIH’s Office of Strategic Coordination (which oversees the Common Fund) has launched a prize competition to solicit entries for new methods and approaches that would complement, make more efficient, or in some cases, replace traditional models transforming the way biomedical science is conducted. Winning ideas could help to inform the goals of the Complement-ARIE program concept. 

On December 6, 2023, the Common Fund hosted a Q&A panel discussion webinar where solvers could learn more about the prize competition and submit questions to a panel of experts.

The challenge submission deadline is January 11, 2024.

Thousands of human diseases are caused by changes, or mutations, to the body's DNA. What if we could treat all these diseases by diving into our living cells to correct the mistakes? The Somatic Cell Genome Editing program aims to make that happen. Recently, researchers have made great progress in correcting DNA mutations using a technique called genome editing, and the first tests of genome editing for human diseases are starting. However, there are still some challenges to achieve safe and effective genome editing in patient cells. The Somatic Cell Genome Editing, or SCGE, program was launched by the NIH Common Fund to develop quality tools to perform safe and effective genome editing in human patients. The SCGE program will make more genome editing tools available to researchers to develop better packages to deliver the tools to the right cells, design new tests for the safety and efficacy of genome editing, and make all of the information available to the scientific community to drive future discoveries and cures for patients.

As part of the DS-I Africa Symposium, this session addressed emerging opportunities and challenges in the application of Data Science and Informatics technologies in various biomedical domains. It also highlighted some key challenges in the areas of data mining, data quality, standards for various types of data, in addition to addressing how cutting-edge data analytics, predictive modeling and Machine Learning, and methods for simulations can advance human health in Africa.

On September 2, 2022, the NIH staff pre-recorded a technical assistance presentation to help applicants prepare your letter of intent (LOI) for the NIH Common Fund’s Community Partnerships to Advance Science for Society ( ComPASS) Research Opportunity Announcement (ROA) OTA-22-007. NIH staff provided an overview of ComPASS program, the LOI requirements and review process, a brief overview of the OTA-22-007 full application process and Other Transaction Authority (OTA) Mechanism. The goals of ComPASS are to 1) develop, share, and evaluate community-led health equity structural interventions that leverage partnerships across multiple sectors to reduce health disparities and 2) develop a new health equity research model for community-led, multisectoral structural intervention research across NIH and other federal agencies. The Office of Strategic Coordination (NIH Common Fund) has published a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for a new initiative of the Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions (SPARC) program. This initiative called the Human Open Research Neural Engineering Technology (HORNET) Initiative (U41 Clinical Trial Optional) is intended to support HORNET Centers to develop and disseminate open-source implantable neuromodulation modules and systems to help facilitate translation of new peripheral neuromodulation therapies to humans. The FOA utilizes the cooperative agreement U41 activity code and applications are due January 12, 2022 by 5:00PM local time of applicant organization.

On April 27, 2021, the NIH Common Fund hosted a pre-application webinar for the Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity initiative’s funding opportunities (RFA-RM-21-021 and RFA-RM-21-022). NIH program, grants management, and review staff discussed the overall scope and intent of these funding opportunities, the review process, and the use of the cooperative agreement (U01) mechanism. NIH staff also answered questions submitted by participants. The Common Fund’s Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity initiative is part of NIH’s UNITE, an effort aimed to address structural racism and promote racial equity and inclusion at NIH and within the larger biomedical research enterprise.

This session highlighted the emerging field of health metrics sciences and its role in measuring and monitoring summary measures of health in Africa to better develop and implement measures to reduce the burden of disease.
