Russell P. Tracy, Ph.D. (1949–2026)

Russell P. Tracy, Ph.D. (1949–2026), was a central leader in the NIH Common Fund’s Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC), the largest targeted NIH investment to understand how physical activity improves health and prevents disease. As a Principal Investigator of the MoTrPAC Consortium Coordinating Center (CCC), he helped lead the integration and execution of a complex, multi-site effort designed to advance knowledge of the molecular transducers of exercise.

His leadership within the CCC supported key functions of the program, including facilitating team science, coordinating studies, promoting transparency, enabling the sharing of data and resources, and advancing best practices for multidisciplinary research. Dr. Tracy also led the Biospecimens Repository Core, a key component of the Consortium Coordinating Center, and served as Vice-Chair of the MoTrPAC Steering Committee, where he helped guide consortium priorities and foster collaboration across diverse teams and disciplines. He carried out his MoTrPAC responsibilities with the diplomacy that reflected the wisdom and experience accumulated across an outstanding research career, and with a witty sense of humor that reflected his love of life.

Dr. Tracy is remembered within MoTrPAC for his enduring legacy of discovery, leadership, and collaboration.
