The NIH Council of Councils approved the Precision Medicine with AI: Integrating Imaging with Multimodal Data (PRIMED-AI) concept to become a Common Fund Program on April 21, 2025. 

The PRIMED-AI program will support the development and adoption of innovative, reliable, and cost-effective AI-based tools that integrate clinical imaging with other health data types (“multimodal data”) to enhance care for patients with chronic and other health conditions. Accomplishing this goal will revolutionize the delivery of personalized medicine and substantially improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of health for the American people.

PRIMED-AI will bring together multiple areas of expertise in a consortium of researchers, industry leaders, and clinicians participating in the following efforts:

1. Imaging-Multimodal Data Integration – projects to design and develop new approaches to access, organize, and ultimately integrate clinical images with other health related data types to generate AI-algorithms focused on unmet clinical needs.
2. AI Algorithm Development – projects aimed at identifying, developing, testing, and benchmarking AI-based tools that use multimodal datasets comprised of clinical images combined with other health-related data types to predict health-related outcomes.
3. Clinical Implementation – projects to implement program-relevant AI-based predictive models into workflows that demonstrate clinically meaningful performance in improving diagnosis, treatment, and quality of health.
4. Building Trust and Coordination – create a hub that facilitates interdisciplinary coordination across the program, algorithm validation, education, and outreach.

PRIMED-AI informational webinars and funding opportunities are expected to be announced starting in Summer 2025.
