Meeting Summary

The National Institutes of Health convened a symposium on new models for large prospective studies on January 22, 2010, in Bethesda, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to:

  • Hear from national and international leaders and funders of large cohort studies and biobanks, in particular the UK Biobank, about novel study designs; approaches to achieve efficiencies in recruitment, examination, and sample collection and handling; strategies to address consent and confidentiality; and lessons learned from pilot studies and full-scale implementations; and
  • Identify areas of opportunity and collaboration, and identify possible next steps.
More than 200 scientists and leaders in cohort studies and biobanks from multiple countries participated, sharing information and expertise and engaging in open discussions. The meeting consisted of seven sessions, including recruitment, information technology, questionnaire and examination, consent, biorepositories, health outcomes and health information, and funding agency perspectives. The first six sessions had two presentations followed by a panel discussion. The seventh session consisted of five presentations followed by a panel discussion. The presenters and panelists were provided "guiding" questions relevant to their session in advance of the symposium. Presenters shared the details of their cohort study or biobank, specifically identifying novel design aspects, approaches to gain efficiencies in cost and throughput, and lessons learned (Read the cohort and biobank summaries). The panelists addressed questions from the audience and the session chair. The Meeting Report (PDF, 36 pages) summarizes all the presentations and discussions. Speakers, chairs, and panelists are listed at the end of the report.
