Citizenship Requirement

Q:  My institution has identified a recent Ph.D. who should be highly competitive for the DP5 grant application (NIH Director’s Early Independence Award).  However, we are uncertain whether U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required for him to be eligible.  Please let me know before we proceed with the nomination and letter of intent submission.

A: U.S citizenship/permanent residency is not required of the candidate. However, he/she must have legal status to work at the U.S. institution for the term of the award.
