In the epididymis of the male reproductive tract, “apical-reaching” basal cells express angiotensin II type 2 receptors (red). They detect angiotensin II (ANGII) in the lumen of the tube, where spermatozoa mature and are stored. They then communicate their findings to neighboring clear cells - which acidify the lumen via a proton pump (green) and keep sperm dormant—via the local production of nitric oxide (NO). NO triggers the extension of proton pump-rich microvilli from clear cells and stimulates proton (H+) secretion.
