Resolvins, Protectins, and Chronic Pain Resolution

Resolvins, Protectins, and Chronic Pain Resolution

Top: Structure of resolvin. Middle: Expression of resolvin E1 receptor ChemR23 in a sensory neuron (green). Bottom: Co-expression of ChemR23 (blue) with nociceptor marker TRPV1 (red) in sensory neurons. Resolvins are a novel class of lipid mediators derived from omega-3 fatty acids and produce potent anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving actions by activating G-protein-couple receptor ChemR23 on immune cells. Resolvin also powerfully inhibits persistent pain by acting on ChemR23 receptor that is expressed in pain-sensing (nociceptive) sensory neurons.
