Argininosuccinate Lyase Is an Essential Regulator of Systemic Nitric Oxide Production






























The urea cycle includes a series of enzymes that transfer nitrogen from ammonia and aspartic acid into urea. Embedded within this cycle is the nitric oxide cycle. The two pathways share two key enzymes argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS) and argininosuccinate lyase (ASL). ASL forms arginine which serves as the precursor of urea in the urea cycle and nitric oxide in the nitric oxide cycle. ASL may regulate the availability of arginine utilization at both the cellular and organ level for nitric oxide production.
